Does anyone else find themselves maddened by some of the P tendencies such as holding out for many different options before making a decision? I am struggling with this...I admire their laid-back style and try to bring some of that into my high-anxiety life, but I can't seem to see decision-making through "P eyes." What's the perceived benefit in keeping multiple options open and delaying decisions? I read something about needing to make the decision with "all available information", but how can you ever have ALL the information...and if you do, hasn't the time to decide probably passed?
I'm not criticizing other personality types. I genuinely want to know how these things look through P perspective (we are probably viewed as pushy), or if any of you other INFJs have similar experiences/insights to share.
I will cross post this question.

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 7:53 PMI can't stand it when people dither over making decisions. I had one boss who was totally afraid of making decisions, and it nearly drove me crazy! I want to make a decision & get on with the work.

" What's the perceived benefit in keeping multiple options open and delaying decisions?"
Well it's not exactly about the perceived benefit of being open ended it is much more like that is the way I am.
"I can't seem to see decision-making through "P eyes."
Well making a decision to far in advance makes me really uncomfortable---like physically. So my decision making is really impulsive like instead of planning my day I do what I feel like at the time.
You know I think it's much less wanting to keep my options open when making a decision; and more like having a weird need to make decisions impulsively, or to "go with the flow." Which of course requires keeping my options open in many cases.
Like I started writing this post yesterday, but in the middle of it I had this random impulse for Indian food. Well I started cooking it at eleven pm
so I didn't get finished with the food till like one am. Then I just had to watch several you tube videos and take a shower, even tough I had taken a shower earlier that day.
See I need to be random which means not following through with my plans. -

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 6:37 PMI actually get it, FP's are formidable people, talented with spontaneity. My Judging ability keeps me wanting to organize everything important in my life such as my studies and the way my room looks like :P but i do have a tendency to use the FP conception of "making what i feel like, when i feel like it" for some other things, rather not as important and i know it is a great feeling. The only problem is when making a real important decision FP's tend to freeze because they really dislike pressure and Deadlines.
It is a matter of fact not "the wanting to do so" premise but the "needing to feel free" what keeps them from choosing a preferred side. They just look everywhere for pros and cons in a non-aware state; this making them unbelievable understanding of how people feel and what they could do to help them. This does mean they worry about the future, but they just conceive it in another way, they really enjoy living on the right here right now, because it is easier to make a decision at the time, then compromising for something they might not feel like to do in the future. Being an FP is about living life day by day instead of knowingly planing what when and were to do. Forget about schedules, give an FP a problem to solve where he/she's interested with and they will have it solved in no time ;)

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 6:33 AMAwesome comments! I think I kind of get the spontaneity/freedom aspect now. I guess it has been frustrating because I have been hurt by what seemed to me like inconsistency of action...but I had not thought about it from the "what feels right at the moment" view. That makes more sense. -

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 6:26 AMI need the commitment. I used to be all for the spontaneity all the time. Now, I can only handle the spontaneity some of the time. If time is money or time is effort, I need a plan. It doesn't have to be super detailed, but I need one. You can always deviate, but after a while inconsistency will become an annoyance from someone you expect to be reliable.

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 7:32 PMBeing an ExFP I hate making decision until I'm 99% sure of it (I'm never 100% anything sure).. thus I need to know as much as possible about the situation to make a sound decision. Making a quick decision that turns out wrong would be the most horrible thing in the world to me, especially when there's other people involved. Also I hate schedules and plans because I'm confident in my ability to improvise my way out any situation.. if I can't charm my way out :D Oh, and the time to decide NEVER passes! There is always time for everything.. whether it's now or later. Maybe that's why we never feel the need to fit everything into a certain schedule, because time is limitless for us?
I think if you want FP's to be a little more decisive, just put a little stress on the situation. I read on some site somewhere that under extreme stress we become the opposite type.. dunno about extreme stress, but in stressful situations I become just like ISTJ's, no messing around, down to business, get things done. All's I need is a sense of urgency to put me in the mindset :o -

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 9:47 AMi m an INFx..i agree that when the anxiety-level of a situation dictates, i shift quickly from P to J, even impatiently so. i think thats because the moment of decision is very clear then, and not so most other times...
a friend asked me the other day, "when you come to a fork in the road what do you do?" my reply seems typical, judging from the posts here:
'i walk on both paths as long as possible and at the last second choose the one thats prettiest.."
as i get a little older, the prettiest path is increasingly the more challenging path, so i guess thats a good sign.
at the same time, being pretty evenly J as well, i get pretty settled on a course of action right away sometimes, and it can be hard for me to open up to other options...
what a blessed mess ! -

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 2:19 AMWhat an interesting question about the fork in the road...I think my answer would be to pick the most interesting-looking one, then later regret that I had made things so hard on myself instead of picking the easier one. :-) The problem with decisiveness is that a considerable amount of the time you screw up the decision because you didn't wait for complete information...but then, we do get things done, if imperfectly!

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 5:52 PMI'm an ENFP...
I do like decisions to be made... makes me feel better... Glad that things are settled.. esp. by someone else. (wink)
BUT.... new information causes me to change my decision...
Sometimes I just don't have enough information to render a decision... It's completely mentally confusing. I don't hold out. I just can't. It's like asking who's your favorite flavor of ice cream when you're an ice cream fanatic. How could you honestly answer that question? You love each flavor in different ways.

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 7:54 PMUnfortunately, 'm fatally attracting to P's, especially ENFP's. An Achilles heel I suppose.
They compliment me, and madden me, simultaneously. I envy their spontaneity. -

Re: Trouble with Ps, especially FPs?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 8:12 PMSo far, the couple of INFJ's I know cause a small line of static upon interaction sometimes.....
Kinda frustrating to me...
But yeah..... there's definitely attraction there...
