What do you do in your free time? What do you enjoy doing?

I seem to be one of those people who never really enjoys anything, and I often struggle when other people ask me what my hobbies are/what I did on the weekend/ what I'll do in my week off etc. The others seem to spend their time constantly being busy going to pubs, parties, on vacation, or other sorts of activities that I never do, and I feel like a freak becuase I dont seem to have any interests at all by comparison. But if I do the things others like, I don't enjoy them, and I find I want to go home.... Is that an INFJ thing? Do you have hobbies or other things that you really enjoy doing?

  • I'm kind of the same way, but mostly because I don't have a lot of free time, I think. In addition to my regular job (hoping to quit soon to do music full time) I have several hours of cello practice to do every day, and I teach cello. I also belly dance, but that's taken on more of a role than just 'hobby.' Other than that I'm a big wine geek & like enjoying it with my friends & I spend probably way too much time on the internet.
    • Unsu...

like to keep myself busy...couldnt imagine myself just doing nothing..but i do enjoy alternate realities...such as secondlife, and also playing the sims. lol..other than that, i like reading and chatting with my friends...but i try to avoid encounters with many strangers...will attend small gatherings, but will feign sickness if i had to attend some big party... ;)
  • I like:
    reading
browsing at bookstores and checking out new libraries
keeping up with election news online and on CNN
going to coffee places with friends, my husband, or my kids (one at a time) and having great conversations
    taking walks
exploring areas of my city that are new to me
    cooking complicated stuff
watching food tv (greatest guilty pleasure)
    working on my old house
doing logic problems (in puzzle books)
making lists of my priorities and pondering them until I can see the big picture of my life (if that makes sense)

    I don't like:
    participating in team sports
crowded, overwhelming events like fairs, parades, parties, bars
movies with no plot or character development but lots of car chases, etc.
    guided tours
    shopping
  • I wonder if our professions have anything to do with a need for down-time. as a therapist, i find that i want to be alone a whole lot of the time when i'm off work, especially most days after work and at least one day of the weekend. i just need that time to recharge by reading, walking my dog, and hanging out on my deck. i sometimes don't even leave the house except to walk my dog - i don't want to go anywhere busy. maybe just to the library to pick up books i've ordered on-line and then retreat to the sanctuary of my home and read!
i do love seeing a friend (one at a time, though.. not in groups. maybe teeny groups, like three or four at the most) one or two days after work. it's easy for me to isolate so it's good when i have some social things like dinner planned.
    • Work drains me too and I need down-time to recharge during weekdays, but I often also have some sense of urgency, as if I cannot just do nothing. Instead I end up writing e-mails, searching the Internet, or sorting all my photos. During weekends I love to hike, kayak, surf, or go on photo trips alone or with good friends. I am quite hooked on the gym as well, but since I don’t want to be there together with all the men that are about to explode, I go before work and almost have it all to myself. I also enjoy reading and right now “Confessions of a Philosopher” has caught my interest. Once I get started, it is difficult for me to leave it. Once I get started, it is difficult for me to leave it.
      • My time off is my time OFF. Not on. If i must run from place to place, errand to errand, drinking here, there and everywhere, then I come home frazzled and every muscle in my body is stiff. No thank you.

I love reading, and if I had a boat, i'd probably be out in a lake somewhere, floating in the middle, reading a horror novel. I also write (not sure if I'm any good, and I imagine I won't know until I venture into the publishing world). Sometimes long walks along tree-lined streets is nice, though I avoid dense forests (I hate bugs, really). Sometimes somewhat strenuous exercise can be invigorating, but I prefer yoga. I like spending time with the younger members of my family, shopping, and watching dvd's. I enjoy dating as well, but this area really isn't made for someone who isn't already coupled up for life.

In other words, I like vegging. I hate the taste of alcohol, and I hate the pressures that come from a lifestyle of partying and bar-hopping. I don't even like drunk people (I swear they say the most retarded things and think they're meaningful).

So while many many people in my age group (20's) think that I have no life at all, I actually have quite a full life...i just enjoy the simple things more than the average person and don't require alcohol to enjoy them. :) A nice side effect being that I'm not hung over half the time, nor to I sleep with random strangers and claim memory loss the next day.
        • Lexie: "if I had a boat, i'd probably be out in a lake somewhere, floating in the middle, reading a horror novel."

Hey, I've got a boat! Everyone's invited to come float out in the middle of the bay and read! ;)

(btw, I just read your profile, Lexie... I went to Florida State, too. Small world!)
  • I rarely "relax" in my free time...even if I think I'm supposed to be. I usually give up on it and set about cleaning, go for a run, write, or read so that I feel I have accomplished something. I think my identity is rather caught up in being productive/increasing my understanding of the world...I don't know if that's an INFJ perfectionism thing, or just me. I'm also really strongly intuitive on the scale (100% according to tests I've taken) so I guess it's just extremely difficult for me to "enjoy the moment." I'm getting slightly better at this as I get a little older, though.
    • I am the same way. I think it's because of how much I hate being caught unprepared. I hate the feeling of working under pressure, so I do everything I can to try to foresee what needs to be done ahead of time. If I don't use my "downtime" productively, I am nagged by the feeling that I will pay for it later.
      • Hey
        How old are you guys?

I might be having what used to be known as a mid-life crisis. But mine is much different from those that were described to me when I was a child. This is a crisis born of having become newly aware in such a way as to have your understanding of the meaning of life itself completely changed. Suddenly, no action makes any sense whatsoever, no situation is satisfactory, and yet you cannot quite yet understand what it is that you are supposed to do now that you know that the game you thought you were playing has no more basis in reality than the Easter Bunny. It's on the brink of madness, I say. LOL!!

        LOVE YOU ALL MADLY

  • I'll guess that most of us prefer solitary pursuits....things we can do alone or with someone who is very close to us. We prefer the complex to the simple, the challenging to the easy.

If you're into the outdoors, one pursuit that I found very satisfying was fly fishing. It's a sport you can do by yourself, or with someone. You can learn the basics in two to three days, but it will take you a lifetime to really know it all and to have done it all. It can take you to some incredibly beautiful places far and near. You can integrate it with your vacations as the main theme.

When I was fly fishing, I found myself at times in these Zen-like moments where there was nothing but me, the water, the fish, and the surroundings. They call it the Zen of Fly Fishing.

Try it, you might enjoy it.
  • Like most of you, I don't like parties. I hate the crowds, all the noises, and I don't drink.

I enjoy reading, and singing along with my IPOD. Or, I like to be with my closest friends, and if we do hang out, it's usually the same old stuff we normally do. Wich suites me fine. :)

My hobbies are not intense or very exciting, but I always have a good time. :D
