INFJ/P Careers?

Hi,
I'm new to the group and am exploring personality type and careers. I've recently tested as INFJ although I stongly identify with P types too - especially in the organizational skills domain. I also change my mind pretty frequently, but that may just be a factor of me flirting with new possibilities.

I have a degree in geophysics and worked in the oil industry for about a year and a half. During this time, not only did I feel I was feeding a terrible imperialistic machine, I felt everyone around me was my polar opposite. I'm curious to know what "careers" any of you have found particularly rewarding, how you got there, etc.

Thanks,
Brandon

I can definitely relate to your discomfort. I worked in a life insurance company for 2 years and started to feel like my soul was dying! I had to get out of that situation. I went back to school to finish my Anthropology degree, and I think for my master's I will end up with Public Policy. Politics of course has many of the same issues, but I feel that with a strong sense of what it SHOULD be like, I can make a difference. A la Barack Obama, but of course on a much much smaller scale.

I change my mind a lot, also. I think you are right that the INFJ preference toward future possibilities keeps us looking for better opportunities everywhere. I think this creates a more fulfilling path to success, even if it's not a straight one!

One more thing I thought of. I read that INFJs (and I believe INFPs too) usually need people-centered careers to feel satisfied that they are contributing. Maybe that will help. :-)

      thanks Rachel,
i'm going to be doing research at my alma mater for the next year. while working, i plan to take classes in all sorts of subjects. i'm hoping something (and only one thing:) will really spark my enthusiasm. I def. could see myself involved in some sort of service-oriented profession with an investigative twist - i.e. psychology/counseling. i recently took the strong interest inventory (career test) and a computer regurgitated professions I am likely to enjoy:
      Technical Writer
      Photographer
      Psychologist
      Editor
      Librarian
      Musician
      Graphic Designer
      University Professor
      Medical Illustrator
      Occupational Therapist

It's a good thing I'm returning to school because geophysicist is quite far from any of the occupations on this list :)

Then the thing is, you'll probably end up doing something completely different from your degree or your interest! Good luck.

Yes, thank god for the prerogative of changing our minds! I think I'd have a panic attack if I had to commit to a career for 30+ years!

I feel you. I just left the military after nine years. Pay and benefits and travel were great, but deployments sucked the life out of my friends, and I looked at them and went, "Gotta go." So now I'm a full time grad student studying Writing.

I know it's cliche, but do what you love. For me it's: traveling, the arts, movies, screenwriting, writing in general, music. Anything liberal arts related, virtually.

I'm still figuring out what I want to do when I grow up, but I do know I want to do it in New Zealand or somewhere overseas. If you do consider going back to school and want to entertain jobs overseas, look up www.BUNAC.com, Transitions Abroad, Work Abroad, Teach abroad. Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Somehow TEFL overseas just appeals to me because there is a big demand for English with global businesses and things. TEFL certifications can be pricy but worthwhile.

I also thought about working fro STA (Student Travel Assosciation). Essentially you're a travel agent for college students wanting to do a study abroad program. I also thought about film and other things. Those a really competitve to get into, as I've discovered.

Along with my screenwriting class, i took an on-camera acting course for fun, and it's helped loads with public speaking and other things.

So I say, Dude, it's out there for you. Go for it. Since you're a geophysics major, you may want to consider a job in New Zealand where environmentalism is HUUUUGE! I visited the place once and never wanted to return. Go onto a site called seek.co.nz. It's the most popular New Zealand jobs search engine, and they're predominately upfront about pay scale. Remember it's in NZ dollars which is slightly weaker than the US dollar, but cost of living is cheaper there. And kiwis are cool people.

I currently work as an administrative assistant, which is like...banned for INFJ types. But eh. The thing I'm having huge problems with is that it is so hard finding a company that truly cares about its employees as opposed to the bottom line. I hate how they'll fire Joe Schmoe and give some useless top exec a 30% raise. They don't deserve it! I hate how health insurance is increasingly costly, and the company doesn't pay a higher share. I hate how there's no such thing as pension packages, and saving for 401K is a joke- who has extra money to save?

The service industry, the peons...they're so disrespected in our society even though they provide a very vital and basic function of doing the dirty little details that the execs seemingly never knew how to do. People need a living wage. People need to be paid enough that couples can survive on one salary, albeit a little less luxuriously. And why the hell do useless people get paid millions a year. A YEAR? No one NEEDS that amount of money a year. No one. But Sandy Joe who's a cashier at Goodwill does need a little more money. So tell me how this horrible imbalance is productive to society?
