hehe I though it was just one of my strange quirks until I read an article, that INFJ's tend to connect with role models.
http://infjorinfp.com/docs/RoleModeling.htm

That "connecting" thing just happens to me all the time. Sometimes it produces quite a strong bond that stays with me for years - I carry that character inside my head as if some sort of "hero" for me to look up to :)

Strangely enough I most often connect with female characters though I myself am male. It might be related, that it's more socially acceptable for girls to display extraverted feelings on the screen. And it's hard to describe that actual feeling - it's something like ... "beeing in sync" with him / her

The movie characters that I can totally identify myself with are:
- Amelie (seems to be a favorite in this tribe) :)
- Scarlett Johansson from "Lost in Translation"
- Franka Potente from "Run Lola Run" and "Princess and Warrior"
- Jim Carrey from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

And some anime characters:
- Yoko from "12 Kingdoms"
- Urumi from "GTO" - she's in my avatar
- Megumi from "Cheeky angel"
- Akira and Alicia from "ARIA"

I was relating to a lot of characters as I read through these, lol.

A lot of empaths connect with Deanna Troy from Startreck. I definitely see a connection there. Also, when I was a kid I felt drawn to Isis, Bionic Woman and my all time favorite, Linda Carter's Wonder Woman. I think what I liked about all of them is that they were kind of alien in the world but respectful and powerful in it with a focus of lightening the burden for humanity. Kind of, in the world but not of the world.

I learned I could be strong and powerful and feminine. I knew they were just characters but with poor role models around me I had no problem putting them all together to create a role model for myself.

it's almost like you're treated worse for being a part of something like that but not being it yourself. they're angrier at you because you approve or support it/them, whatever the type of underdog.
i like to consider myself openminded and liberal but it just isn't working for me for some reason. i know what you mean about getting cynical, every time i promise myself not to get involved in problems that aren't mine i forget my personal promise or get guilty then...jump in and eventually pay the price.
it's so tiring.

Definitely identified with T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia as played by Peter O'Toole.

one of my favourite movies of all-time

I really like the character because he's such a misfit. He's more at home in a foreign culture (I feel like that when I go to European countries and I'm not European)...an idealist, identifies with the underdogs, sort of a self-depricating character but he's also really ambitous (wants to change world history)
very INFJ

and to top it off he's a writer too

I've always had the necessity of identifying myself or looking for qualities not only in movies and tv shows but also with all the people i know :P
So i guess it's the "i want to have the best of the best qualities" complex but I'm fine with that ;)
The best one I've found yet is:

Kyle MacLachlan in Twin Peaks (Series and movie) as Special Agent Dale B. Cooper; i just couldn't believe how alike we seem to think and act. The way he gets information with his feelings, dreams and how bizarre his life can get; lets just say i thought i was somewhat crazy. I also love the way he addresses everyone and just looks at the bright side; always learning while teaching.

Guess the Detective career could fit me somehow ;D

I'd have to say for the longest time as a kid, I idolized the cartoon mouse Mrs. Brisby from "The Secret of Nimh". When I say idolized, I mean I ran around the house like a mouse. I wore the cape she had and even cut a hole in it and made it look raggedly like she did. For whatever reason, I thought she was the bravest, kindest and most courageous character I'd ever seen on screen. And very humble and lady-like, too.

I loved "Little Voice". That movie was great. I liked Ewan McGregor's character and his infatuation with his lost pigeon. And my favorite part, oddly enough, is with Michael Caine getting drunk and singing, "Over the Rainbow, Ladies and Gents. Over the F***** Rainbow!"

This isn't a movie, but I identify strongly with Olivia Benson from Law & Order: SVU. Her struggle with a lack of supporting family, and with the balance of remaining compassionate for the victims but still protecting them and gaining justice is really compelling to me. I think the writers do a great job with well-rounded characters on this show.

This will sound really sad, but in my early twenties I couldn't stop watching two movies: Clean and Sober (the Michael Keaton character) and The Lost Weekend (the Ray Milland character). I'm not an alchoholic, but I connected with the characters' plight, i think largely because it was a time where I was very unsure of myself, and many of my character flaws were getting the best of me at the time.

I'm new to the tribe so please forgive me if this subject has already been discussed, or if this question is off-topic for INFJ's.

My question is: Has anyone fallen for a character in a movie? By 'fallen' I mean connected or identified either emotionally, or on some other non-trivial level (like love), with the character's persona, plight, situation, needs etc. The distinction between lust and something approximating a love interest gets blurry when the movie industry – with its focus on youth and beauty – wraps characters up in beautiful packages. If you've experienced this kind of non-physical connection with a movie character, what was the movie, and who was the character and how did you feel connected?
